Money makes the world turn, or so goes the old saying. Money is an essential part of life – fact. Without it, an average person can’t pay the bills, put food on the table or de-stress. Come on; there’s nothing like a vacation to take the edge from life. It’s easy to see why people think their salary is important and why they strive for more money. However, cash is by no means the most crucial factor in a career no matter how much you earn. The leading contributor to a career is job satisfaction, and here are the reasons why.

Coworkers

Colleagues and peers often get a bad rep because they make silly mistakes and play office politics. Sure, they are annoying and having to deal with them daily is a challenge at times. But, for every coworker you want to punch, there is one who makes you laugh and smile. Not only do they make work bearable, but they make it fun too. In fact, a whopping 40% of people said their peers are the reason they love their job in a 2015 VirginPulse survey. Without the right people by your side, money is almost pointless.

Boredom

Here’s another survey with another significant percentage of people with a definitive opinion. A 2015 “Why & How People Change Jobs” post on LinkedIn reported that 36% of people change jobs because of boredom. Yep, the idea of a day sitting behind a desk perusing Facebook is appealing now, but not every day for the rest of your life. People have ambition, and that drive forces them to take on new challenges when life gets stale. So, as soon as a career with purpose rears its head, they dive in head first. You could be one of these people, but only if money isn’t the reason you get out of bed in the morning.

Accomplishment

Along the same lines of boredom is a sense of accomplishment. In the morning, a person who loves their job doesn’t think about their pay packet. He or she doesn’t envisage a bank transfer and smile. No, said people put on clothes and trudge out of the house. People who help others are the ones who can’t wait to get to work to get another shot of adrenaline. There is a reason medical assistant programs are becoming more popular, or why saving the planet is apart of business today. Employees want to challenge their skills and make a difference in the world, and it isn’t because of money.

Growth

“Growth” is another word for a promotion, and a promotion means money. But, according to a HubSpot survey, there is more than meets the eye. 20% of employees look for growth opportunities when they consider a job role, and it’s for power reasons. The money is nice, but the stigma and benefits which come with a managerial position are immensely satisfying. Let’s face it – everyone wants to work three days a week.

As the boss, you can and no one can say a word!
