You Must Stay in Touch With Your Employer

If you know you want to return to your job, then your priority should be keeping a good dialogue open with your manager or boss. While your employer should be making an effort to keep in touch with you and provide support where possible, if you want to go back, it’s your responsibility too.

Your boss will need to keep up with your recovery so they have an idea of when you will be able to come back to work, and what the situation will be like when you get there. Once you make it known that you feel better and want to return, you will usually be asked to attend a meeting. Don’t get anxious about this, as it shouldn’t be formal and is the normal way to go about things. They are to welcome you back into the workplace and inform you of any changes since you’ve been away. They will also want to find out how you’re feeling and discuss any health issues that might hinder how you do your job, so appropriate adjustments can be made. They may even offer you temporary responsibilities you can easily perform without hurting yourself again.

This could mean taking on a lighter workload, different hours, or even offering part time working from home if it makes it easier for you to return. A good employer will be happy to do this, but you should remember that employers are not required by law to keep the position open. The majority of companies will welcome workers back with open arms, but not all. This is why it’s a good idea to stay in touch and ask for updates on the status of your job.

Don’t feel under pressure to recover faster so you can return to work, as this will likely lengthen your recovery time. There’s no time limit on recovering from an injury, as it will vary from person to person. Any physio, medication, and other factors can all make a difference and affect your energy levels. As your mood can also be affected, it’s a good idea to inform your employer of these things when you have your meeting.
