So what are the best paid jobs in the UK, and how much can you expect to earn in your profession? Whether you’re looking for retail jobs Scotland or marketing jobs in London, here’s a guide to how much you might eventually earn in today’s climate.

From entry level role to CEO

According to the annual survey of hours and earnings, the best paid job in 2013 was CEO of a major organisation.

If you aspire to be a CEO, you could eventually be earning over £100,000 a year, with the average rate of pay for someone in this position being upwards of £80,000.

To become a CEO you’ll likely need a solid academic background along with plenty of experience in the field. Start out in an entry level role and rise up the ranks in a company to make it to management level.

Pilots, officers and aviation professionals

The transport industry can be a great place to forge a career in terms of salary, with craft pilot and transport associate professionals coming second and fourth in the hours and earnings survey results.

Pilots earn an average of £78,000 a year and transport associate professionals, which includes air traffic controllers and ship offers, earn around £65,000 a year.

Media and marketing

Rise up the ranks in the marketing industry to become a marketing director and you could enjoy a salary somewhere between £60,000 and £100,000 a year. This is the upward earning brackets for the country’s marketing directors, making theirs the third best-paid job in the country according to the hours and earnings survey.

Medical professions

It’s no surprise that doctors rank highly on the list of the best paid professions. You’ll need rigours medical training for this one, and at least five years at university.

Surgeons and GPs are amongst the best paid doctors, and if you work your way towards one of these roles and you could be earning between £70,000 and £130,000 a year.

The emergency services

You could enter the police force at any level, straight from school or after completing a course of further education. Training is offered on a variety of levels, and the police force is regarded as an employer that offers attractive salaries.

You could work your way up to be a senior police officer and earn anywhere between £50,000 and £60,000 a year.

Retail work

If you want to go straight into a career without further education, than retail can be a great profession. You can start off in an entry level hourly position and quickly work your way up to become a store manager. You could then go on to become an area manager for a large store and earn up to £40,000 a year.
