It’s a career with plenty of jobs available, and it’s easy to get into. Should this interest you, then it’s vital you know what skills are needed to be a manual laborer:

Teamwork Skills

Most manual labor jobs, like a construction worker, require you work as part of a team. Usually, it’s towards the goal of building something. If you can’t work together as a group, you’ll never get things completed to the standard required.

So, learn how to function in a team unit, and you’ll soon be going places. Labor recruitment agencies will often look for signs that you’re a team player when they go through your resume. Make sure you make your skills clear to them and give examples of teamwork.

Time Management Skills

Every task you do, as a laborer, needs to be completed to a strict time limit. Things have to be built and done on time, to keep your customers happy. There’s nothing worse than someone taking ages to build something; it’s very frustrating. For this reason, you need to have great time management skills to make it in this job. You have to learn to complete tasks quickly and to a high standard. And, you must be able to prioritize and do certain tasks in order of importance.

Manual Handling Skills

A big part of being a manual laborer is having to handle lots of things. This can be equipment, resources; you name it. If you don’t have the skills to do this, then it’s likely you won’t get a job. It’s vital that you learn advanced manual handling techniques, so you don’t injure yourself on the job. This includes learning the correct way to lift things and carry them safely. No one will hire someone that keeps injuring themselves when they work as it will cost the company money.

Listening Skills

If you want to be a manual laborer, you have to be good at listening. Most of your time will be spent working for someone and being told what to do. Your site foreman will instruct on what needs to be done is you work on a construction site. Work as a builder and your boss will relay instructions to you and the rest of the team. If you listen well, then life will be a lot easier for you. Companies don’t tend to hire laborers that don’t listen; you need this skill.

Problem-Solving Skills

There are many times where manual labor jobs throw up problems here and there. So, you need to have the skills to be able to solve these problems, big or small. If you can’t do this, then it can set projects back by days, weeks, or months. It’s a very important skill to have and one that people look out for when hiring manual laborers.

Working as a laborer will be hard work, there’s no doubt about that. But, jobs can be well-paid, and if you enjoy hands-on work, then it’s a great career option for you.
