It may be a cliche, but is also happens to be the case: it takes money to make money. This does not just refer to needing capital to start your own business, but can be as quotidian as needing to have your outfit dry cleaned before an interview. If you really are just starting out, you may need to invest a little money in getting the bus to your first day at work. It is true on a more general level too.

Your schooling cost money, and it was the taxpayers who picked up the bill. Educating one’s citizens now seems like it is just something that every government must do in order to be taken seriously around the world. This was not always the case, though. For a long time, only a fraction of society could read and write (in English history, the Church was the great educating force of society and most of the literate people that lived at that time were monks or priests).

A rather more cynical reading of the government’s massive annual investments in the education of its youngest citizens is that they one day expect a return on that investment. They hope that each child will grow up to a prosperous, contributing member of society. The important contribution that they have in mind is tax. Nothing is free. Ever.

To succeed in life, you have to be prepared to invest in yourself. If you are currently looking for a new career and want to know how much you can expect to earn, or you have a job, and you want to move up in the world, here are a few things to ensure you have the best chance possible:

Presentation is key. The job market is so competitive now that your CV can be dismissed for something as simple as a spelling error, or for being too long. Besides, some people find it difficult to continually say positive things about themselves. You have to aggressively sell yourself and if you do not know quite what your best features are or how to make them seem indispensable to a prospective employer, check out Purple CV writers. Before long, you will start to be impressed by your own achievements.

Employers are interested in what skills you can bring to their company. Having good IT skills is not going to set you apart, especially amongst Millennials. Being able to do something that no one else can is a great way to get noticed. Besides, you may enjoy learning something new. Consider taking a night school class. You could learn a new language or try and improve your confidence by doing something like stand-up or improv comedy. The internet is perhaps the most egalitarian educational force in our society and taking advantage of that is often free. You can study courses at Stanford and Yale for as much as it costs to cover your broadband bill.

It is true in every other part of life, but persistence is important in business too. Don’t give up. You will find a job that’s right for you eventually.
